Glam Clam Finish Along: Week 1

(This is the content of the email that was sent out for Week 1 on April 12, 2021.)

I’m so excited to see how many finished Glam Clam Quilts we can create as a group in the next six weeks! The first week of the Finish Along is for all of us to finish getting prepared AND to start a bit of sewing.

Schedule

Here’s the basic schedule for the Quilt Along. There will be lots of fun extras as we go along. Check your email every Monday for new information for the week.

Finished Means. . .

As you already know this is an unusual sew along since the goal is to finish all of the Glam Clam quilts – many of which were started years ago. So a ‘FINISH’ will look different to each of us since we are all at different places with our projects. Also quilters are working on anything from baby to king size quilt! Take a quick moment to decide what a finish will mean to you. If you have a pieced top it may mean either quilting and binding yourself or preparing and sending to a long arm quilter. If you have a King Size 8” Clammy quilt all cut out with one row sewn maybe a good goal for you will be to piece half of your rows.

For the purpose of the Finish Along a finish is at least a completed top! This will make you eligible for winning prizes at the end. So, that’s our main goal. Download and print out this Goal Worksheet which will help you to do a bit of planning for YOUR Glam Clam finish.

Let’s Get Organized!

Some of you are all prepped to sew. If so you can skip this section and skip to the next section to start sewing your Week 2 rows to get a jump start! If you’re not prepped then follow the following steps from the Checklist to Get Started as quickly as possible so that you can start sewing!

  1. Cut out your WHOLE quilt. Click here for YouTube video.
  2. Lay out your WHOLE quilt using the pattern for instructions. Make all your decisions now. It’s not easy to change things once you have clams sewn in.
  3. Take a picture or two for future reference.
  4. Stack and label each row in order so you can just concentrate on sewing! Stack each row from left to right adding the next clam to the bottom of the stack. You can write row numbers on a scrap of paper and pin it on the stack or use the Row Labels in your pattern download.
  5. Count the number of rows you have left to sew and divide by four! This is how many you will sew each week. (Note: We have a week at the beginning and the end for a buffer!)
  6. Once you get all of this done then start to sew Week 2 rows to get a jump start on it!

Let’s Start Sewing!

OK. Let’s start sewing our Glam Clam!!!! I’ve left this week to make sure everyone is all prepped. Once you’re ready I want you to start sewing! No matter if you haven’t started OR if you just need a reminder this video will show you everything you need to know about sewing your Glam Clam.

One More Video: Registration Marks

One last video that would be helpful as you start to sew your Glam Clam Quilt is the one that demonstrates how to press registration marks for ease of piecing your Glam Clam.
